Interviewee: Brown, Iva
Interviewer: William Tribble
Date: August 17, 1980
WT: This is William Tribble. Today is July the 17th, 1980. We are interviewing Mrs. Iva
Brown from Charleston, Mississippi. Mrs. Iva, I understand that you have attended some school
in your younger age and also taught in the Payne’s Consolidated school. Would you like to
relate to us some of your experiences of when you attended the Charleston grade school and high
school?
IB: That has been such a long time. Well we had our fiftieth class reunion in 1976. So I
graduated in 1926 from Charleston High School. It was not a consolidated school then. It was a
citric school.
WT: Now at this time did they have an agriculture school also?
IB: Also had an agriculture school.
WT: What do you know about that agriculture school?
IB: I remember that the boys and girls from all over the county and surrounding counties,
Tallahachie County and surrounding counties, came here to school. They had a boy's dormitory
and a girl’s dormitory and an administration building.
WT: Did you ever attend the agriculture school?
IB: No
WT: Do you know what the fee was to board?
IB: I do not know
WT: Did they have grades 1 – 12?
IB: No only high school. Now when you speak of high school 10- 12 or 9- 12?
WT: 9- 12
IB: Do you know about how many students they had to attend this school?
