Day, Albert 12/ 7/ 79 MSS # 83 Tape 1 of 1
By: Jan Peeler
Today is December 7,1979. The following is an interview with Mr. Albert Day, resident of
Gunnison, MS, which is conducted by Joann Peeler, history student at Delta State University,
Cleveland, MS.
JP: Mr. Day could you kind of give me a biographical sketch of what you do now and where you are
from and everything?
AD: Well I have lived in Gunnison all of my life. I farmed at this little community right here,
Perthshire. This family has owned this property for years. I used to manage for them. After he went
out of business, I started renting land from the family. I have been doing that ever since he went out
of business.
JP: Can you tell something about your father and his relationship or connection with this farm?
AD: Well I remember. I was real small. My father was renting some land and farming the lower
Gunnison at the time. Some people, I didn't have any idea who they were at the time. They came
down there and talked to him. It was pertaining to this job of coming up there and managing that
farm up there. They said they were going to start down here. They had bought it. It was called the
Delta Cooperative Farm. It was owned by some syndicate out of New York City. I believe. The man
that I remember is being the man that came from New York City to down here Rocksdale and talk to
the people around my father and some other folks that were up there. His name was Dr. Sherwood
Eddie. I don't know if he was a medical doctor or not. Then the two men who were possibly the most
in charge up here were Dr. Minnow, and I can't. I don't know his first name. He was a medical
doctor. He used take care of all the medical work of the people there on the farm.
JP: On the farm?
AD: Yeah
JP: Did they have any nurses?
AD: Yes they had some nurses. I don't know who any of the were. Then another man under him was
a Mr. Cox. I think Dr. Minnow was more in charge. Then Mr. Cox was under him. They were both.
You might say sort of my father's general management of the farm. The knew nothing what so ever
about farm work. They let him take care of all of that. They also put in a sawmill. They started
