Description	From the Bates (Gladys Noel) Papers. Typewritten letter from Robert L. Carter to A.L. Johnson on letterhead of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, dated April 19, 1949. Carter writes to urge Johnson to influence the Teachers Association to assist Gladys Noel Bates in obtaining a secure position which will pay her at least what she was making as a teacher. Carter writes of the economic distress the Bates family was in since joining the lawsuit to gain equal pay for African American teachers in Mississippi and the responsibility of the Teachers Association to assist the Bates family. Carter also writes about the next hearing in the lawsuit, set for May 10, 1949, and of the need for an intervening plaintiff to join the lawsuit.
