Description	From the Bates (Gladys Noel) Papers. Handwritten letter from Ethylene Lewis to Gladys Noel Bates, dated April 9, 1948. Mrs. Lewis writes that she saw news of Mrs. Bates' lawsuit, for equal pay for African American educators in Mississippi, in an NAACP newsletter; and she expressed her support. Mrs. Lewis also writes of her employment as the only African American secretary at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where her husband was a student in the law school. According to Mrs. Lewis, despite regulations against discrimination in employment, discrimination existed in New York; and most African Americans there seemed content to fill low-paying service jobs.
