Description	From the Bates (Gladys Noel) Papers. Typewritten letter from Robert L. Carter to A.A. Alexander on letterhead of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, dated April 5, 1951. Carter summarizes discussions of the National Legal Committee of the NAACP about whether to appeal the Bates case (the lawsuit to equalize pay for African American teachers in Mississippi) to the U.S. Supreme Court. Carter writes that he agrees with the portion of the committee that want not to pursue the Bates case further because he doubts the Supreme Court will agree to hear the case; but because Alexander [and the Mississippi Association of Teachers in Colored Schools (MATCS)] wish to continue, he writes that he will try to persuade the National Legal Committee to continue.
