Description	From the Bates (Gladys Noel) Papers. Typewritten letter from James A. Burns to Gladys Noel Bates, dated June 8, 1949. Burns writes to congratulate Mrs. Bates on the news that the judge hearing the lawsuit brought by Mrs. Bates to equalize pay for teachers in Mississippi had overruled the motion of the defendants (the Board of Trustees of the Jackson, Mississippi, schools) to dismiss the case; the judge ordered preparations for hearing the case and anticipated that a decision would soon be rendered. Burns complimented Mrs. Bates on her patience and forebearance.
